Christian Education Web-Teleconference “Christianity: Between East and West" (Part I: Worship) for Adults - November 13, 2008

Saturday, November 15, 2008:  8:30–10:00 a.m. Web Teleconference.  The Metropolis of San Francisco will host its third Christian Education Web-Teleconference on Saturday morning, November 15, 2008 from 8:30-9:30 a.m.

Location:  your home computer and telephone!

Cost:  $5.00  (see www.sfseminars.org for registration information)  This fall’s topic is: “East meets West - Part I: Worship” and we will be discussing some of the main differences between the Orthodox Church and western Christian traditions, especially pertaining to sacramental worship and overall worldview.  The 60 minute presentation will be followed by a live (audio) open question and answer forum.

The presenter is Dr. Paraskeve (Eve) Tibbs, Metropolis Christian Education and Formation Ministry Chair, who is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California and Chair of the Eastern Orthodox Studies Group of the American Academy of Religion.

The material to be presented is appropriate for both older teen and adult Orthodox Christians with no particular theological expertise.

Many people in the world know little about the Orthodox Church, believing someone must either be Catholic or Protestant in order to be Christian.  Even many Orthodox Christians do not understand the significant differences.  Our theology and Christian worldview is often quite different from western Christians, and without clarity as to how we differ, we can unknowingly absorb views that are not Orthodox.  This affects how we understand Who God is and the purpose for which He created us.

This series of presentations "Between East and West" will help clarify, in a respectful way, some of the major differences between the Orthodox Church and the Protestant and Roman Catholic traditions, noting the Orthodox views on issues such as worship, theology, salvation, authority in the church, iconography, and more.

Tune in on November 15th for Part I: Worship - for a discussion of   important issues such as:

  • Why do many Protestants emphasize the "Word" (referring to the Bible) and the Orthodox emphasize liturgical worship and the Holy Mysteries (sacraments)?

  • When and how did things begin to change between East and West in Church history?

  • What about baptism of  infants?

  • Why does the Roman Catholic tradition separate Baptism, Holy Communion and  Confirmation?

  • Which come first: worship or theology?

These questions -- and more! --  will be addressed.
